One student was killed and over a dozen people injured when the police opened fire and lathicharged a mob when it torched over a dozen government vehicles and part of a police station at Madhubani on Friday. Following the incident, Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar transferred the district magistrate and SP besides ordering a judicial probe.

Over 500 people, mostly students, were protesting "police inaction" after the recovery of a decapitated body on October 3. The body was suspected to be that of a Class X student who had reportedly eloped with a teenaged girl on September 8.

The boy's family alleged that the family of the girl was behind the incident and accused the police of manipulating medical reports. They demanded a CBI probe into the matter on Friday. While the medical reports declared that the recovered body was that of a 26-year-old man, the missing boy was only 15.

The police said protesters pelted stones at the town police station and later torched vehicles. But the police did not confirm if the student was killed in police firing. Additional DGP (headquarters) Ravindra Kumar said: "I will get details of the incident and take appropriate action."

Presiding over a high-level review meeting with DGP Abhayanand, Principal Secretary (home) Amin Subhani and other senior police and civil officials, Kumar ordered the judicial probe that will also find out the circumstances under which the police fired on the protesters, an official spokesman said.

The Bihar Chief Minister ordered the transfer of Madhubani district magistrate Adhesh Titiremare and SP Saurabh Kumar.
