A mob of students set vehicles on fire and clashed with the police, after a college student died in a road accident in Phoolpur area on Thursday.
The police later lathicharged and dispersed the mob, which had blocked the Lucknow-Azamgarh Road by protesting with the victim’s body. About six policemen and over a dozen students were injured in the clash.
Indresh Chakravorthy (19), a BA second-year student of Ram Sulabh Kisan PG College in Phoolpur, tried to jump from a moving bus as it approached the college. He lost his balance, fell under the wheels and was crushed to death. The driver fled the spot but was caught at the next police outpost in Saraimir area, Azamgarh ASP (Rural) S K Rana said.
On getting the news of the incident, a mob of about 300 students gathered and started pelting stones on passing vehicles. A team from Saraimir police station rushed to the spot, but was outnumbered by the students who set afire to an UPSRTC bus and a police jeep. Additional force was sent to disperse the mob, Rana said.
