  • With the September 7 attacks on Assamese students in Sikkim making headlines, Assam Education Minister Gautam Bora on Thursday met North Eastern Hills University (NEHU) Vice-chancellor Pramod Tandon, who assured him that the university will take measures to ensure the safety of students who have come to study in NEHU from other states.

“I briefed the minister about the security measures and assured him of the safety net that is available in NEHU,” Tandon said after the meeting. He said the university will not allow such incidents to happen again.

Bora said he was happy with the arrangements made by the university to ensure safety of students from other states and appealed to the students not to let incidents recur.

Security has been beefed up in the NEHU campus. “We have beefed up security and everything appears to be normal as of now,” East Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police L B Rapthap said.

Rapthap said the police have registered an FIR against “a group of boys” responsible for the incident. “Action will be taken against the culprits when they are identified,” he added.
