Several students of Shri Ram School, Aravalli, Gurgaon, have contracted swine flu reportedly during a three-day school outstation trip, parents have alleged.

Several parents on Saturday said at least 10 students who were part of last week’s field trip to Amritsar, organised by the school for its Class VI students, have been infected with H1N1 influenza.

While parents claimed they had met the school authorities and asked for the trip to be cancelled, school principal Sudha Sahai said, “The trip was voluntary.”

Sahai said five such trips were organised and that there are “no sudden swine flu cases”. Asked about the sudden spurt in positive cases after the recent trip, as alleged by parents, Sahai said, “I don’t have collated data. I can’t give figures on how many students have swine flu.”

Criticising the school’s decision to go ahead with the trip, a parent, who did not want to be named, said, “My son contracted swine flu two days after returning from the trip.”

Another parent said a student returned from the trip with confirmed H1N1 flu, and his father has now contracted the disease.

The school is now closed for Diwali vacations. A teacher said, “We have heard that some students are sick. But Friday was the last working day, so we don’t know anything officially.”
