Angry students held a demonstration against teachers of the Allahabad University on Friday, accusing them of carelessness which resulted in a student sustaining injuries in the chemistry laboratory.
On Thursday, some sodium had got into the right eye of Rohit Singh, a BSc final-year student, while performing an experiment.
As his eye started to burn, he washed his eye with water, which worsened his plight as sodium reacts with water.
He was rushed to a hospital, where he has undergone a surgery.
The protestors blamed the incident on the carelessness of the teachers — alleging that they were not present — and demanded action against them.
They also demanded compensation for Singh.
The head of the chemistry department, M C Chattopadhyaya, admitted that two teachers — Dr P K Tandon and Dr Jagdish Prakash — who were supposed to be present at the laboratory, were not there when the incident occurred.
He added that he had sought an explanation from them. “A report has also been sent to Vice-Chancellor Rajen Harse,” he said.
