Students show how to detect adulteration

Holding test tubes,Government Model School in PAU students – Jaspreet Singh and Prabhsimran – were demonstrating how to identify adulterated turmeric powder. “If turmeric powder gets dissolved in water and gives a yellow colour,then it is adulterated,if some of it settles down or while some keeps floating then it is pure one,” said Jaspreet. Amandeep,their batch mate,was out to tell how to identify pure coffee from taramind seeds. She said,”If coffee floats on the surface of test tube then it is pure,if it settles down then it is impure.” They were at a district conference organsied by the Bharat Jan Gyan Vigyan Jathaa,non-governmental organisation,at Punjabi Bhawan in Ludhiana on Saturday.

While Balwinder Singh and Malkit Singh of RS Model School fascinated visitors with their green model carrying different medicinal plants such as aloe-vera. Jai Singh,a visitor,said,”I came to buy some books and saw these children with plants. They are telling me the medicinal uses of the plants which even doctors do not tell.”

While students from Government Model Senior Secondary School in Salim Tabri,BCM Arya Model School and Sargodha Khalsa School made people aware about low-cost methods to promote health and hygiene.

Dr Arun Mitra,general secretary of the NGO,said,”We organised this conference with an aim to develop scientific attitude among the public and dedicated this day in the memory of Charles Darwin.”
