With Slumdog Millionaire creating history at the Oscars, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Monday said the entire team of the film including musician A R Rahman have done India proud.

The Prime Minister "congratulates A R Rahman, Resul Pookutty (sound engineer), Gulzar (lyricist), and entire Slumdog Millionaire team for the success at the Oscars," a PMO spokesperson said.

Singh said "they have done India proud".

Congress President Sonia Gandhi also congratulated the 'Slumdog Millionaire' team, particularly A R Rehman and Resul Pookutty for winning this year's Oscars for music and sound editing.

"I am delighted that A R Rehman and Resul Pookutty have won this year's much coveted Oscars for music and sound editing. They have done India proud, as have all the Indian actors, technicians and support staff who participated in the making of 'Slumdog Millionaire'," Gandhi said in a statement.

"They represent the finest traditions of our film industry and are an inspiration to all of us," she said.

Gandhi also congratulated the producer and the director of the film for their success at the Oscars and other international award events.

Lok Sabha Speaker Somnath Chatterjee also congratulated the Slumdog team on bringing laurels to India by winning the Oscars.

The film bagged eight awards including two Oscars for Rahman for Best Original Score and Best Song for the song "Jai Ho", which was penned by lyricist Gulzar.

Pookutty, a sound technician from Kerala, won the Oscar in the Sound Mixing category. The movie also won the award for Best Film, Best Director for Danny Boyle and Best Adapted Screenplay for Simon Beaufoy.

stop politicizing oscar entries from IndiaBy: bharadwaj b.g | 24-Feb-2009 Reply | Forward if slumdog was an hindi movie definetly it wouldn't have got entry for oscar. coz bollywood always selected like of "Eeklavya" kind of movie which sure will not be in the list of top 100s. We need to look broader at malayalam or bengali or any regional movies then just mega budget, multi-starrer - flop-show movies. I hope ppl at bollywood understand and be wise.
