A local court in Devgadh Baria sent Gopal alias Kamlesh Vahoniya, a probationary police sub-inspector with Surat city police, and 11 other suspects in judicial custody in connection with assault on police in Limkheda town of Dahod.
Vahoniya, a native of Limkheda and who was posted at Adajan police station in Surat city, was produced before a magistrate on Thursday evening by circle police inspector of Devgadh Baria Jagdish Naik and sought his remand for seven days. However, the court rejected the demand of police custody and sent Vahoniya into judicial custody.
He was arrested in the wee hours of Thursday from Surat. He is the main suspect in the case of assault on police and rioting at a garba venue in Limkheda town early on Tuesday morning. Limkheda police sub-inspector V S Vanzara had to fire in the air after a mob of 150 at the venue assaulted and injured five constables when police asked garba organisers to stop revelry at 2:30am.
