SUCI eyes 5 seats, names nominees

The Socialist Unity Centre of India (Communist) on Tuesday said it would contest five Assembly seats and declared the names of its candidates. Of the five seats, three are in Surat and one each in Vadodara and Ahmedabad.

Rambharat Maurya, SUCI's Surat district secretary, filed his nomination papers today for Limbayat Assembly constituency that has a sizeable migrant population mainly working in the textile industry. Maurya himself has been a powerloom operator for last 30 years and has worked for the rights of labourers.

Rambharat Maurya, a powerloom operator, and Lalit Solanki, a businessman, would be fielded, respectively, from Choryasi and Katargam seats in Surat.

In Ahmedabad, Bhavik Raja will contest from Ellisbridge while Bharti Parmar will be the party's candidate in in Vadodara.

Mukesh Semwal, a member of state committee of SUCI, said, "Our main thrust will be on proper implementation of labour laws in the industry."

29 nominations so far for phase-I polls

Ahmedabad: A total of 29 candidates have filed their nominations so far for the first phase of Assembly polls. While 17 filed nominations on Tuesday, 12 others had filed earlier. The last date for filing of nomiations for the first phase in November 24. Among those who filed nominations today are Ramchandrabhai Krishnanbhai Nair of CPM from Rajkot East, Purushottam Hakkubhai Bodhani of Samajwadi Party from Kamrej and Arunbhai Govindbhai Gohil of Hindustan Nirman Dal from Keshod. The rest are Independents.
