Even in a format that throws up enough twists to make surprises seem commonplace, this is one that few would’ve expected when the Indian Premier League’s second edition kicked off in South Africa five weeks ago.
All through the first edition of the IPL, they were involved in an embarrassing battle to avoid bottom spot. This evening, Bangalore Royal Challengers and Deccan Chargers take on each other for the big prize. The Chargers, who had won just two games in 14 in their first attempt, had booked their place in the title clash by beating Delhi, the form team of the tournament, on Friday night. On Saturday, Bangalore, who won three matches out of 14 last year, sealed their place in Sunday’s final with a six-wicket victory over last year’s runners-up Chennai Super Kings.
Manish Pandey was their hero once again, this time scoring a 35-ball 48 in a tricky chase of 147. “Today’s youngsters play without fear,” captain Anil Kumble said about Pandey’s knock. “Our bowlers did a terrific job. Their total of 146 wasn’t even a par score on this ground.” Coach Ray Jennings was asked if he was surprised. “Once it moved here, the IPL was bound to have a strong South African flavour. We were helped by the fact that we had so many local players in the squad.”
The two teams have taken different routes to the knock-out rounds. The Chargers made hardly any changes to their squad and got off the blocks in style, with four comprehensive wins on the trot. They lost their way in the middle of the tournament, but managed to pick up points when it mattered most.
