'Sunil Joshi was killed as he wanted to surrender'

Samjhauta train blasts accused Rajendra Chaudhary alias Pehelwan shot dead right-wing radical Sunil Joshi by emptying two firearms near his hideout on December 29, 2007 because he had threatened to surrender before the police, the NIA said on Saturday.

Chaudhary was riding pillion on a motorbike driven by Lokesh Sharma when he shot dead Joshi, who was planning to spill the beans.

The duo had done a recce of the place and Sharma, who is already in NIA custody, has confirmed to the investigators the spot where Joshi was shot dead, the agency's special prosecuting officer Subhash Bhattacharya told The Sunday Express. Chaudhary was produced in court on Saturday evening and remanded in NIA's custody till February 11. The NIA said it had solid evidence against the accused.

NIA teams have already seized a few weapons, bank passbooks and chequebooks over the last few days.

Incidentally, the accused allegedly involved in the murder of Joshi are different from the ones who figure in the chargesheet filed by the Dewas Police. The NIA will file a supplementary chargesheet about its investigations and include a report under Section 169 of CrPC if it does not find evidence against the persons who are already in jail as a result of investigations done by the Dewas Police.
