  • After constant heckling in Jaipur on Sunday night, and wary of a repeat act, the Chennai Super Kings officials are now having a rethink on their cheerleading squad travelling with the team for the away match against Delhi on May 8.

Sources close to the team confirmed that the Chennai cheerleaders were subjected to ill-treatment — including incidents of bottle-throwing and lewd comments by the Jaipur crowd at the Sawai Man Singh Stadium — and were promptly removed midway through their match against Rajasthan Royals on Sunday night. The Chennai team officials had denied that the cheerleaders had been taken off due to any crowd-related incidents, saying instead that they had been withdrawn after one of them fell ill during the match. One day later though, they confirmed there had been trouble.

Sources said the officials are now contemplating not to bring the girls to Delhi. “We will take a decision on the cheerleaders travelling to Delhi tomorrow. In the meantime, we are awaiting more details of what exactly happened in Jaipur,” confirmed an official.

The cheerleaders have found themselves in the news throughout the tournament. The Washington Redskins cheerleaders, hired by Bangalore, were the first to hit the headlines, and discarded their skimpy outfits for the game in Delhi. In Mumbai, the government has already intervened with a dress code.

The Delhi Daredevils have also disbanded their ‘imported’ cheerleading squad after the first two games, saying they preferred to concentrate on the cricket. And if Chennai’s support-cast doesn’t travel to Delhi, Thursday’s contest will be the first where all the action will be focussed within the boundary ropes.
