Surat city gets a new mayor

After a long-drawn political battle,the state secretary of BJP (OBC cell),Nirajan Jajmera (Prajapati),has been appointed new mayor of Surat city on Saturday.

After a long-drawn political battle,the state secretary of BJP (OBC cell),Nirajan Jajmera (Prajapati),has been appointed new mayor of Surat city on Saturday. He will be replacing Raju Desai and holding the office for the next two-and-a-half years.

A 58-year-old commerce graduate Jajmera is the son of a primary schoolteacher and hails from Thordi village in Savarkundla taluka of Amreli district. He joined BJP in 1981 as a primary worker and is a tax consultant by profession.

He was in the race of city mayor in 2009 against the party leader Ranjeet Gilitwala,but lost the battle. On Saturday,he pipped BJP councillors Jagdish Patel and Rajesh Desai,who were also in the race for the post.

“My first preference would be to complete the pending projects. My mode of working as a mayor would be in such a way that even small person could approach me in my office or at my home,” Jajmera said.

An acting municipal corporator of Kubernagar in Katargam,he was also vice-president of Akhil Bhartiya Kumbhar Maha Sangh for three years and general secretary as well as trustee for seven years.

Meanwhile,other appointments in the Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) that were announced Saturday include Dayashanker Singh’s appointment as deputy mayor,Rajesh Desai as the chairman of the standing committee and R K Lathiya as the ruling party leader in SMC.
