Surat sub-inspector held for ‘assaulting’ cops in Dahod

A probationer sub-inspector working with Surat city police was arrested by Dahod rural police early Thursday for allegedly inciting a mob and assaulting policemen at a garba venue in Limkheda town of Dahod district on Wednesday. The arrested SI had allegedly gone to his hometown Wednesday night without formally seeking leave from his superiors.

A team led by Devgadh Baria circle police inspector Jagdish Naik arrested SI Gopal alias Kamlesh Vahoniya from Adajan police station area at 1.30 pm.

"We informed the inspector of Adajan police station and arrested Vahoniya. We are to produce him in a court later this evening," Naik told The Indian Express over phone.

The PSI, a resident of Likheda, and 10 others were booked by Limkheda police for rioting, restraining police from discharging duties and assaulting policemen on Wednesday after they allegedly attacked the local police. The case has been filed against a mob of around 150 persons.

The incident had taken place at 2.30 am on Wednesday when Limkheda SI V S Vanzara asked organisers to stop garba in Shashtri Chawk. When Vanzara ordered the organisers to switch loudspeakers off, Vahoniya and Dilip Jaiswal, the main organiser of the garba, protested.

"The mob gheraoed us and assaulted policemen with sticks and stones. They also manhandled police and five constables were injured in the incident," Vanzara said, adding he had to fire one round from his service revolver in air to control the violent mob.

Surat police said Vahoniya was deputed on a flying squad of district election officials for Choryasi constituency since October 10. Sources said the SI had gone to his native place without seeking required permission from senior police officials.
