Survivors need emotional help,so govt tries to reunite families

Four days after they were separated when the building they lived in collapsed in Lalita Park,Dilip Chakarvarti will finally get to see his wife.

Four days after they were separated when the building they lived in collapsed in Lalita Park,Dilip Chakarvarti will finally get to see his wife. The meeting will bring to an end the period of uncertainty the couple went through as one had no clue of the whereabouts of the other.

While Chakarvarti was recuperating at Lok Nayak Hospital, his wife was being treated at Guru Teg Bahadur Hospital for minor injuries. For days, she questioned every doctor and staff member about her husband.

“We had supplied our staff with lists of both the injured and deceased. They were also supplied with photographs. Every morning, they do the rounds and talk to the patients. It was during one such round that this woman asked about her husband,” said Health Minister Kiran Walia.

Chakarvarti’s leg, meanwhile, had to be amputated as it was extensively damaged.

Like Chakarvarti,Vijay Mondol, who was also in Lok Nayak Hospital, will be re-united with his wife at Guru Teg Bahadur Hospital. “The most important thing that a survivor needs is emotional help. And it is essential that we keep loved ones together. We are trying to ensure that all relatives are reunited,” Walia said.

Many of the survivors have been sent back to their native villages. On Saturday,29 people, who were from Saharsa district in Bihar, were sent back by the Delhi government.

Seventy-one of the injured patients, however, will not be discharged soon. “We are supplying them with all basic things like clothes, soaps, etc. Food is also provided to them and their relatives. Many of them have fractures and cannot be discharged right now,as they have nowhere to go,” Walia said.

Meanwhile, despite the Health department digitally enhancing photographs of all bodies, four still lie unidentified.

For further investigation, the Crime Branch has also picked up samples of debris of N-85 from the collapse site and they will be sent to IIT-Roorkee for examination. “We are looking for evidence of Amritpal Singh’s culpability in the incident,” said Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime) Ashok Chand.
