More than 100 acres of farmland along the Sutlej river submerged after heavy rainfall in Ferozepur area on Wednesday.
After assessing the damage, however,DC Kamal Kishore Yadav said today that most of the farmers were encroachers. Farming along the river bed is not allowed and hence they are not likely to be given any compensation. Only those who can show the land registry papers in their name will be considered.
He added that upto four-feet water had flooded fields as water in Sutlej river crossed the danger mark. Paddy and fodder crops in Kamalwala,Kaluwala,Aku Mastke and Nizamwala villages have been damaged. The revenue department officials confirmed that a number of farms were encroaching upon a drain along the river which possibly caused the flooding.
Chief Parliamentary Secretary Sukhpal Singh Nannu, meanwhile, said he would try to get compensation released from the state government for the farmers. Interestingly, the Drainage department seems to be unaware of the encroachments as villagers they have been farming there for several years. Houses were not much affected but farms were destroyed as they were mainly situated in low-lying areas.
