Suu Kyi line open, red carpet for Thein Sein

Thereafter,he flew to Varanasi in an Indian Airlines plane, and went to Sarnath to visit the stupas.

With rapid pro-democracy changes in Myanmar,New Delhi is actively engaging Yangon’s ruling leadership, pulling out all stops to give President Thein Sein a red carpet welcome on his Buddhist pilgrimage trip. At the same time, the Indian mission in Yangon is in “constant touch” with Aung San Suu Kyi,who visited the embassy premises for a painting exhibition held recently.

Thein Sein, who has been in India since Wednesday, landed in Gaya in a Myanmar Airlines plane, and was then flown in a special Air Force aircraft to Kushinagar, where he visited the famous Mahaparinirvan temple. He returned to Gaya for a second visit to the Maha Bodhi temple on Thursday morning.

Thereafter,he flew to Varanasi in an Indian Airlines plane, and went to Sarnath to visit the stupas.

From Varanasi,Thein Sein came to Delhi, and is scheduled to meet Prime Minister Manmohan Singh for talks Friday. The President will visit the Akshardham Temple in Delhi, and pay his respects at Rajghat.

While Thein Sein is busy with talks, his wife Daw Khin Khin Win will visit Cottage Emporium on Janpath and the Nalli sari shop in South Extension. She will also visit NGO Child Relief and You.

Lines have been kept open with pro-democracy leader and Nobel Peace Prize winner Aung San Suu Kyi as well. Sources said the Indian ambassador has been meeting her regularly since March this year, and former foreign secretary Nirupama Rao met her in June.

Last month,Suu Kyi was invited to an exhibition of Rabindranath Tagore’s paintings, titled Jeebansmriti,to the Indian embassy — this was her first visit to the mission since being released from house arrest, sources said.

Joint Secretary Harsh Vardhan Shringla, who handles Myanmar in the Ministry of External Affairs, said,“We don’t comment on the internal affairs of countries… The Myanmar government has allowed the visit of the UN Rapporteur after a long time,he has been given unfettered access, the Myanmar government has started a dialogue with Suu Kyi,about 100 political prisoners have been released,30,000 banned websites have been unblocked.”

Delhi and Yangon are working on a slew of agreements, including a line of credit. Deals are likely in health and education.

Thein Sein has come with nearly his entire top team, including 13 cabinet ministers.
