Swedish Summer in Sketches

Jatin Das exhibits 70 sketches he made 23-years ago, with poet and friend,Dom Moraes

He rushed out of the air-conditioned room, with a jhola slung over his shoulder, and a wine glass in hand. “People have become so superficial!,” exclaimed Jatin Das,the renowned artist. Pointing to the sprawling garden,he added,“Look at the lovely garden out in the open, but no one would have it!”

The artist was in the city on Wednesday to showcase a collection of his sketches at the Swedish Embassy. Created 23-years ago,the sketches pay tribute to the time Das spent with Dom Moraes, late Goan poet, writer and columnist, while travelling through Sweden in 1988. “Dom and I travelled by road, train and air all over Sweden, and while he published his book,Serendip,in 1999,I made a hundred drawings,” he said, looking visibly excited about the exhibition.

Of the 100 sketches he made, about 70 hung on the walls inside the Embassy. The thick, white sheets held faces of prominent Swedish artists like Peter Dahl and Olle Bonner, authors like Hans Anderson, among other filmmakers, musicians, and poets,a tribute to their trip called “A Summer in

Sweden: the Journey of a Poet

and a Painter”.

Moreover,Das is eager for his show in Sweden, the country he had not gone back to since 1988. “It’s uncanny that I am going to the country after 23-years at almost the exact time of summer back then. I miss Dom Moraes, for he was a great friend,” he said.

The solo exhibition will showcase for the first time in Sweden, the same set of sketches,in Galleri Astley in Uttersberg,Sweden, from July 17 to August 21,this year.
