  • The PM’s stress last time that there would be ‘zero tolerance of corruption’ has been watered down in the president’s address. This is significant, given that the most debilitating legacy of this government’s first term has been the erosion of norms and the perverse use of institutions.

Ten, not fiveBy: Suren | 22-Jun-2009 Reply | Forward We are in the same position vis-a-vis Pakistan that we were in 10 years ago; not 5 years ago. Clever bit of misleading spin there, but some of us have learnt to read between the lines.
Cynics don't get ShourieBy: Zee | 18-Jun-2009 Reply | Forward Cynics cry and shout at those who warn everybody about impending danger. He did his bit when he was in the Government. A best-in-class Disinvestment mechanism and the speed with which he took decisions are definitely exemplary. One doesn't have to agree 100% with anybody including Shourie, but the issues he talks about are nevertheless the most important for India.Very good piece Sir.
The eternal cynicBy: Commoner | 17-Jun-2009 Reply | Forward Mr. Shourie, it is a well known fact that our country faces hundreds of ills and thanks for documenting the same. However, it is absolutely unproductive to just keep screaming about problems. Please do not assume that people at large do not know the issues or they would not like to solve them (albeit they may not be experts of these issues as you are). Please try to be a part of the solution and not simply a cynic. If you so desire to solve the issues and you do not enjoy the people's mandate, cooperate with those who have the mandate. By simply screaming yourself hoarse, you do not open yourself to invitations for such cooperation.
