Swine flu: 3 more deaths in week

The city registered three more swine flu deaths this week taking the toll up to 118 so far. Expressing concern over the increasing toll,a senior health officer said,“As winter is ideal for the virus to spread,the toll is only increasing.”

In Sassoon General Hospital,nine patients are in the ICU,of whom two are in serious condition,said Dr P Pawar,superintendent of the hospital.

The death of three persons — two women and a two-year-old boy — were reported from different hospitals in the city. The officers said that as many as 20 fresh cases of the flu have been reported.

A centre for the children of the Pune University staff has been closed down following swine flu scare on campus after a child contracted infection. Two departments near the centre are also shut till further notice.

The health officer said that a total of 16 people are on ventilator and six are confirmed swine flu cases.

Of the 4,560 persons checked,510 were given Tamiflu taking the total number of persons administered the tablet to 47,538. Of this,20 were confirmed cases,57 were admitted to the hospital of which 39 were suspected cases and 18 were confirmed cases. A total of 6,377 persons have been discharged from various hospitals of which 5,083 persons were suspected cases and 1,294 were confirmed cases.

On Tuesday,55 persons were discharged,of which 40 were suspected cases and 15 were confirmed cases.
