Erratic weather conditions are cited for the re-emergence of the H1N1 virus infection, which has led to 21 cases in the past week. Of these, five persons are on ventilator support.
More said Kanta was admitted to a private hospital in Baramati after symptoms of cough and breathlessness, from where she was brought to KEM Hospital here on March 10. She was shifted to Sahyadri Hospital on March 14 after her condition turned critical. On March 12, her throat swab was sent for tests, which tested her positive for the virus. However, doctors said a sonography conducted at Sahyadri Hospital on Wednesday had found a mass in pancreas, which was indicative of cancer.
The five patients on ventilator includes a 51-year-old autorickshaw driver at Bharati Hospital who continues to be critical. Prayag Hospital founder and critical care intensivist Dr Shirish Prayag said the condition of a patient on ventilator at the hospital had stabilised. The remaining patients are admitted to Global Hospital at Rahatne, Aditya Birla Hospital and KEM Hospital.
As many as 41 swine flu cases have been reported in Pune from April 2011. More, however, said the situation was under control and surveillance measures were being stepped up. He said people with pre-existing medical conditions should take care to protect themselves.
Serum Institute officials said the virus had been endemic to the region and efforts were on to develop the trivalent vaccination against flu, which also includes protection against the H1N1 virus.
