Travel agencies have reported a drastic fall in number of visitors to the city in the wake of swine flu scare.
Neeta Travels, which conducts bus tours across Mumbai, has seen a 70 per cent drop in visitors since the last couple of days, according to proprietor Aziz Shaikh. “Business has been hit badly. Occupancy in our buses has come down to 10 per cent from 60 per cent.”
“We were eagerly looking forward to the long weekend. However, it does not look that promising anymore,” said Anuradha Kanba of Andheri-based Anuradha Tours and Travels.
Nehru Science Centre, Worli, which usually receives around 1,500 to 2,000 visitors a day, saw only 500 to 600 on Thursday. The centre is set to see further drop as schools and colleges remain shut for a week. “Several schools have cancelled their visits ,” said G Shaikh, PRO, Nehru Science Centre.
One of the worst affected tourist spots is the Taraporewala Aquarium that saw a 50 per cent drop since Tuesday. Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangrahalaya director Sabyasachi Mukherjee said the museum recorded a 10 to 15 per cent drop in visitors.
Recession coupled with swine flu has dented business for Essel World Theme Park. Bhushan Motiani, head, marketing and sales, said it witnessed a drop of 20 to 25 per cent in visitors in the past few days.
