With the popularity of Twenty20 cricket rising fast, star Sri Lankan batsman Sanath Jayasuriya forsees a grim future for the game's one-day format.

"Cricket has changed all over world. For the public to watch this game we need for it to change. The one-day game will be phased down. The IPL is good for cricket and good for cricketers also," Jayasuriya, who has made over 12,000 runs from 421 ODIs, said in an interview to a television news channel.

The left-hander also welcomed the introduction of the game's shorter version to attract more spectators.

"Cricket has changed all over the world. For the public to watch this game we need to change it. You can now enjoy all that in around three hours," the 39-year-old cricketer said.

Jayasuriya, who is the first cricketer to be appointed a goodwill ambassador for UNAIDS, also said he is committed to use his image to serve the society.

"Coming from Sri Lanka you need to do a lot of charity work and help in any way you can. People love cricket and they look to cricketers so as a team Sri Lanka also does a lot for charity. It's a personal commitment," he said.
