“The complainants told us that the ATM machine would not respond after the PIN was typed. The transaction could not be cancelled either. They left without taking any money but later found cash had been withdrawn from their accounts,” H G S Dhaliwal,Deputy Commissioner of police (South),said.

“As per information,Khan operated from 5 to 8 pm when the ATM was least crowded and there was no security guard. A trap was laid on March 1 at the said ATM. Around 6.30 pm,Khan allegedly used an adhesive to disable the ‘cancel’ button of the machine. He has been arrested,” DCP Dhaliwal said.

The police said Khan would stand in queue behind his victims after disabling the buttons with an adhesive. Once the victim left after failing to take the money,Khan would remove the glue with the help of a screwdriver and withdraw the money, police said.

Police have seized Rs 12,000 and his tools — a screwdriver and a bottle of adhesive from his possession. A debit card was also recovered, police officers said, adding he is well-versed with the operational functions of an ATM machine.
