The Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) on Monday sought a “nod” from the Supreme Court to allow it to close the southern gate of Taj Mahal considering “the need to increase the security there”.

Superintending archaeologist D Dayalan has apprised the apex court of the ever-pertinent need to protect Taj from all kinds of threats.

“In the immediate vicinity there are a number of commercial and residential buildings. The threat of a sudden influx of unwanted elements and persons with malafide intention is very high,” said Dayalan.

While denying all allegations that the ASI is carrying out certain construction activity, Solicitor General G E Vahanvati said, “There is no such activity going on, there was only certain conservation activity which is essential for the upkeep of the monument.” Meanwhile, the Government on Monday extended an ‘invitation’ to the apex court judges, monitoring the Taj conservation case, to “come and see for themselves” steps undertaken by the ASI for protecting the Taj.
