Take action against hospitals running from basement: HC

The Punjab and Haryana High Court Monday directed the Jalandhar Municipal Corporation to take action against all the hospitals running from basements within three months. The directions came from a division bench comprising Chief Justice Arjan Kumar Sikri and Justice Rakesh Kumar Jain while deciding a petition filed by Kamal Kumar Agarwal against the private hospitals running from basements, which are meant to be used for parking purpose only, in Jalandhar.

It was alleged in the petition that seven private hospitals — Tagore Hospital and Heart Care Centre, Chhabra Hospital and Maternity Home, Satyam Hospital, Patel Hospital, Bowry Medical Centre, Joshi Hospital and Vasal Hospital - functioning in residential areas, have created problems for the residents.

The court was informed that at least four of these hospitals have opened clinics, patient wards and laboratories in the basements, in violation of bye-law No 4.7 of the Municipal Corporation, which mandates that basements can be used only for purpose of parking. The vehicles of doctors, other staff and patients are therefore, parked on the streets or on the main roads, creating traffic problems. These hospitals have also encroached upon footpaths.

Vulgar songs: HC notice to Punjab

CHANDIGARH: THE Punjab and Haryana Court Monday issued a notice to Punjab government division bench seeking its reply on steps taken to curb the menace of vulgar and indecent songs in the state. A division bench of Chief Justice Arjan Kumar Sikri and Justice Rakesh Kumar Jain issued the notice while hearing a petition filed by Nawanshahr-based NGO, HELP, through its general secretary, Parvinder Singh Kittna. The petitioner informed the court that the state has not taken any steps despite a legal notice sent through him on January 4 to the authorities.
