  • Taking his 'Marathi manoos' agenda a step further, Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) chief Raj Thackeray on Monday asked the legislators in the new Assembly to take oath "only in Marathi" or face his party's wrath.

"The House will witness what my MLAs will do if anyone dares take oath in other language," Raj told reporters.

MNS has 13 MLAs in the 288-member House.

"In Karnataka, a Marathi-speaking MLA was expelled from the House as he could not speak in Kannada. Will our legislators show the same attitude about Marathi," Raj said.

Raj's statement follows his recent warning to Samajwadi Party MLA Abu Asim Azmi who had demanded the House agenda in Hindi.

"Hindi is our national language and it should come after Marathi," Azmi, elected from Mankhurd and Bhiwandi seats, had said in his letter to Assembly secretary.

Furious over Azmi's demand, Raj Thackeray, known for his anti-North Indian campaign, said "if Azmi wants the House agenda in Hindi, then he should go to Uttar Pradesh."

A mellowed Azmi had later said, "I have nothing against Marathi. I respect the language which I understand but cannot speak as my mother tounge is Hindi. But I will try to learn Marathi."

mnsBy: sree | 03-Nov-2009 Reply | Forward funny character like the cartoons, shri raj thackeray. Could the media report about his family members and which school his children, if he has any, go to. more personal details would make the world realise what sort of fraud these guys are. they would like their children to study in the best of the english schools while they want their country men to languish and remain backward. God save India
Who will save India?By: Raj | 03-Nov-2009 Reply | Forward Which god!!!!!!!!? There are millions and they keep reproducing too, right?
Ramnna -Marathi in MaharashtraBy: anu desai | 03-Nov-2009 Reply | Forward Just like Tamil in Tamil Nadu and other southern and eastern states who give their State Language a priority, Maharashtra should follow the same.
Anu - Indian first then tribalBy: Sujeet Ramanna | 03-Nov-2009 Reply | Forward Go to Tamil Nadu and stay there if you want to dont spread your hatred of language among the cosmopolitan and metropolitan city of Bombay. This is India first and it has many languages, and any person living in any part of the country can express in any language he/she wants to. The constitution allows him/her to. He cannot kick out citizens of India, living in INDIA! That is the constitution! And if he wants to go against the constitution, he should be kicked out of the country!
pl stop this By: sk tripathi | 02-Nov-2009 Reply | Forward dear all , respected adavaniji/ dear rahul jipl stop this idiot to this level only if both of you met at airport for benefit of our mother nation pl stop him he is dangerous than any terrorist/maosit or thief ...pl stop him
Mr. RamannaBy: prafull | 02-Nov-2009 Reply | Forward Mr. Ramanna, your name suggests that you are from the south. Will the Chief Minster, allow Bhaiyyas or Gujratis or Marathas,to take oath in any other language,if they were elected.Learn to respect the language and the culture of the state you live in
OathBy: rks | 03-Nov-2009 Reply | Forward If state culture could be saved by taking oath in Marathi or whatever language, MLAs are more than welcomed to do so. But I guess people themselves are changing form increasing onslaught of consumeristic culture to care about Marathi , hindi or Kannada.we are talking of language then why are we coming and leaving comment in English, lets be practical enough and read only Marathi, kannada newspaper websites and write comment in that language?I guess people don't understand the language of poverty, farmer suicide, illiteracy, mal-nutition :(
learn a little lesson yourself firstBy: Sujeet Ramanna, Bombay | 03-Nov-2009 Reply | Forward You first need to learn a lesson about living in the country you are in first!! This is first India and then all the states. There is a constitution, that people of this country have to follow, not tribalistic leanings. Any person in this country can work in my city, just like anyone from this city can work in any other part of this country. If Raj Thackeray wants to behave like seperatist, then the Indian state should not hesitate to treat him like a kashmiri fundamentalist and send the army to sort him out!
This is ridiculous, Hindi can and should be used by any politician of assemblyBy: Sujeet Ramana | 02-Nov-2009 Reply | Forward Hindi is the naional language, and the politicians elected in the Maharashtra assembly cannot dictate to anyone about not using Marathi in the house. This dictat of not using marathi language is as stupid as Raj Thackeray himself is! We as people of Maharashtra will not be divided in the terms of language. And we will not allow such mischief mongerering demented Raj Thackeray allow our plurality to be compromised. Any politician that feels like taking oath in Hindi should surely do it, and not care what Raj Thackeray has to say or do about it. Just like no one can stop any MLA to take oath in Marathi, no one can stop anyone from taking oath in Hindi. One India, period
NO hindiBy: RamGopal | 02-Nov-2009 Reply | Forward again there is no national language in india. do not market your northbelt waste language here. Marathi should be used. hindi ?? trow it out of india . may be used in bihar.
NO hindi? Get your basics straightBy: Indian | 11-Nov-2009 Reply | Forward With all due respects RamGopal, if you feel that hindi (our national language - like it or not) is a "northbelt waste language", I don't see a point in using English either. Why are you using english then? We stand united as INDIANS & not marathis or biharis or madrasis. Like someone one put it - "One India, Period."
