With the dilapidated condition of the Sankrail police station being exposed following the Maoist attack, the state government today finally kicked off the much-needed facelift of the security conditions of the police station.
Barbed wire fencing, two bunkers and jawans of the state Armed Force with INSAS rifles are some of the changes that the police station has witnessed. But the policemen attached to this police station termed the measures as “too late and too little”.
Nothing has been done about the infrastructure of the police station and the adjoining barracks. The police station is yet to have a proper gate as it is open from all sides.
On October 20, the Maoists attacked the police station, abducting one officer and killing two of them.
“We have initiated the process of enhancing the security of the police station. We have started special arrangements to ensure that there is no recurrence of the incident which took place recently,” said Anuj Verma, District Police Superintendent of West Midnapore.
The security has also been tightened in and around the station. Two new bunkers have been made, which are being manned by armed jawans equipped with sophisticated weapons.
The constables and officers of the police station are far from being satisfied as nothing substantial has been done about their living conditions.
Gouranga Mondol, a constable in the police station, said: “They have enhanced the security only after two of our officers were killed. This is too little, too late. Look at our barracks and the police station, there is no change.”
