A 17-year-old married girl was publicly whipped by the Taliban in Pakistan's restive Swat valley for allegedly having an affair, an incident which sent shock waves across the country with the rights groups slamming government for its recent peace deal with militants in the region.

The burqa-clad girl was forced to lie on the ground on her stomach and flogged publically, showed a video footage, apparently shot with a mobile phone camera, which was being aired by the Pakistani TV channels.

The grainy footage showed one militant holding her feet and another her head while a third one was seen whipping her as the girl pleaded for mercy.

The private Geo TV reported that the incident took place in Kabal area of the valley six months ago.

It quoted local people as saying that the girl was punished for having illicit relations. The video footage was aired weeks after the provincial government signed a deal with the militants to end violence in the valley, 140 kms northwest of Islamabad, leading to enforcement of the strict 'Sharia' law in the troubled region bordering Afghanistan.

Condemning the chilling incident, leading human rights activist Asma Jehangir said that the peace agreement had no meaning if it allowed the Taliban to continue their activities.

By signing this pact, the government had made the unarmed residents hostage to the Taliban, she charged.

Supreme Court Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry took suo motu notice of the girl's flogging and summoned the federal Interior Secretary and North West Frontier Province police chief to appear before him in court on April 6, officials said. The interior secretary was also asked to produce the girl, who was whipped, in court, they said.

If India is non-tolerant and Hindus are not accomadative then how so many cultures are living in India and practicing their own belief. It is rubish to say that a stray incident some where is the indication of total nation's attitude. These idiots who dare to make comments on the silent majority must know the Indian population have come out of ages and is vibrant. You don't have this kind of culture any where in the world. So don't waste your energies in criticising the time tested attituteds of Indians. Search some where you can satisfy your writing skills. Just because you are not questioned doesn't mean you can write rubish with fake names and locations to discredit others.

Perhaps you people may have authored it .You need not have gone so far into ancient history. Social discriminations based on class was prevalent in all ancient and medival societies. Slave labour and trade was prevalent in USA till Abraham Lincoln outlawed it. Slave trade was prevalent in Roman empire as well medieval islamic empires. And who told you thes sutras are fundamental to Hinduism. Is Christianity or Islam responsiible for it. And who told you what are the fundamentals of Hinduism. For your information these Sutras are no statutory law like Indian penal code. They were at best moral sanctions not meant for literal implementation. Their relevance was for that time and particular place. Do you know that Ved Vyasa who compiled Vedas was son of a fisher woman. Valmiki who wrote Ramayana was of low caste. Lord Ram was compelled to sent Sita tom forest honouring the words of a washerman. If you want to sermonise on Hinduism go and learn ten upanishads and Brahma sutra commented upon by Sankaracharya. If not restrict your comments to what you are familiar with.
