Prime Minister Manmohan Singh is the Obama adminstration’s first state guest, and his visit is expected to clarify a range of niggling doubts about the Indo-US equation. While George W. Bush and Dr Singh decisively inaugurated a new chapter with the nuclear deal, which promised to be only the beginning of a beautiful friendship between two like-minded democracies, was that turnaround for keeps? When Obama was still an unknown quantity during the presidential campaign, he struck a couple of wrong notes with his scare talk about outsourcing, and Democrat mutterings on non-proliferation. In recent months, there has been palpable unease on the Indian side of the equation, as the Obama administration seemed to have simply let go of the India plot. It has tended to use Pakistan as the fulcrum for South Asia, and sees India as one knotty strand in the Afghanistan tangle. Gen McChrystal’s report on “increasing Indian influence in Afghanistan” being likely to “exacerbate regional tensions and encourage Pakistani countermeasures” hasn’t helped, and nor has Obama’s recent visit to China, where he seemed to tacitly endorse a mediatory role for China in South Asian affairs. It seemed to suggest that India had simply fallen between two stools — Pakistan and China were urgent priorities for different reasons. Of course, given Obama’s complete immersion in his difficult domestic agenda and two battlefronts, this perception is probably more circumstantial than conscious.

Manmohan Singh’s visit will be significant in how it manages to convey the congruence of Indian and US interests, India’s economic stakes and its participation in security matters — while also pointing out the Indian perception on Afghanistan and Pakistan and where it may depart from the American vision. India must also hammer home the fact that it is invested in maintaining independent and valuable ties with both the US and China.

Mini Vacation / Ignore ObamaBy: Zalle | 24-Nov-2009 Reply | Forward Mr. Obama has played his cards, along with China and Pakistan; and in India's share comes a good party i.e. PM's state visit to US. Indian PM ought to view this trip as a mini vacation of sorts, and return re-energized and determined to fix the Indian Legal and Education System, along with its Infrastructure.
India needs to sit tight during Obama yearsBy: Sakthi | 24-Nov-2009 Reply | Forward Indian (nominated) PM's visit is not going to be a big thing here in USA. He would bend backwards to please US administration in all possible ways. India needs to live through the Obama years and wait for next republican administration,we just can't expect anything from Obama admin. until we sign NPT and CTBT etc. As far as, to make India a world player, we need to deserve that, its not that Bush says India the world leader Or Obama doesn't care about it. Keep the economy growing at 9 for at least next 10 years, then see the results. Let us deserve before desire.
An opportunity! But Singh is not capable of making use of it.By: R.C.Mohan | 23-Nov-2009 Reply | Forward The invitation to Mr.Singh and his visit to White House has to be viewed as an opportunity for India to impress upon US about the immediate need of their interference in Pakistan's internal affairs as the domestic issues of the country have been almost like a volcano in the final stage. US's concern on the global terrorism has not been reflected in any of their move on Pakistan's affairs but for certain verbal statements. It only construed to their insincere approach towards Pak's support to terrorism against India. The PM Mr.Singh should use his good offices to express the countries' concern in strong words directly to US President. This is the right opportunity to get a firm commitment from US. People cannot be taken for a ride by the announcement of pacts on insignificant issues between the two countries. This visit of Mr.Singh should be a test for his statesmanship and if he fails people should protest in strong words to ask him to pack his baggage and show the doors.
Highest AlikeBy: George P. Joseph | 23-Nov-2009 Reply | Forward The assumption of USA: India is rotating itself and going round the world. There are Seasons and its atrocities. Cordoned with rivals in every manner, the country is to beg on the door steps of other nations for food, etc., though the people suffers, but boasting banner should be highest alike the leaders money bagging level, to protect themselves and to roast the common man.
Wait for the goof.By: YD | 23-Nov-2009 Reply | Forward I don't think Obama is losing sleep and staring at the ceiling. What Obama had said in Beijing, he meant it. World leaders don't goof, only Manmohan Singh does. Not much will come up from this visit, except that Manmohan Singh got his did-dins in white house and that will make Manmohan Singh and Congress shout 'success'.
