Talking point with ulka gupta

I had studied about her and how she comes to be known as Jhansi ki Rani from my textbooks especially since History is my favourite subject.

Had you come across the historical figure of Rani Laxmibai in school textbooks before you were approached for the role?
I had studied about her and how she comes to be known as Jhansi ki Rani from my textbooks especially since History is my favourite subject. But those books didn’t talk about her childhood — only her role in the freedom struggle is spoken about.

What references did you use to learn more about character?
I was given books to read and movies to watch. A book by Vrindavan Lal Varma on the queen was also provided and I read chunks from it. I also watched other films like Mangal Pandey: The RisingCHK to get an idea of the freedom struggle warriors, their outfits and their body language.

Any physical training?
I underwent a two-month training course for horse riding and sword fighting. I had always wanted to learn how to ride a horse. I would begin my training at 5.30 am and train till noon. The afternoon was reserved for acting workshops. I also brushed up my skills in malkhambSPL,which I learnt at school. Apart from the physical training,I also had to learn Sanskrit so I could speak the shlokas that my character needs to deliver on the show.

What is the biggest challenge you face in portraying this character?
Nothing’s very difficult as I have been trained but my biggest challenge is the acting. I have no prior experience of theatre of acting but I want to excel on the screen. I have the confidence and I know I can do it,which is what keeps me going through the training, workshops and shoot.

Like your character, are you a tomboy in real life as well?
Pretty much. When I am not studying,I am either playing cricket or riding a horse. Thankfully,my real-life parents aren’t like my onscreen parents who would oppose the idea of a girl participating in sports.

Is acting your dream career?
Actually no; I am enjoying acting right now but when I grow up,I want to be a cameraperson. I’d love to handle this marvel of technology. In fact,I already know how to because the cameraman on sets,Deepakji, has been teaching me that. But I am yet to learn the lighting aspect of it. My mom doesn’t fancy my career choice but I am sure I will convince my parents when I grow up.
