The deadlock between the Congress and NCP over portfolio distribution continued for the second consecutive day on Tuesday even as Maharashtra Chief Minister Ashok Chavan said in New Delhi that talks would begin on Wednesday between the alliance partners.
The formal talks for government formation will begin in Delhi tomorrow, Chavan said after meeting Sonia Gandhi. He said the Congress would insist on a fresh formula for government-formation. The NCP has been demanding a repeat of the 1999 formula under which it had held key portfolios, including Home,Finance,Power and PWD and the Congress had the CMs post. Some of the NCP leaders have said if the party is asked to forego these portfolios,it would rather support the new government from outside than join it.
Meanwhile,NCP chief Sharad Pawars nephew and Water Resources Minister in the outgoing government,Ajit Pawar,on Tuesday said he was not disappointed that the party decided to retain Chhagan Bhujbal as the Deputy CM. He was reacting to speculation that he was annoyed at being denied the post.
