Tamil Nadu election process to begin with filing of papers tomorrow

Election process to elect 234 members for the Tamil Nadu Assembly will be set in motion tomorrow.

The election process to elect 234 members for the Tamil Nadu Assembly will be set in motion tomorrow with the commencement of filing of nomination papers.

The notification calling for the polls on April 13 will be issued by Tamil Nadu Governor Surjit Singh Barnala.

While all is settled in the DMK-led front with the party contesting from 119 seats, differences persist among the allies in the combine spearheaded by AIADMK with actor-politician Vijayakant’s DMDK and Left parties insisting on particular constituencies and protesting the lead partner’s ‘unilateral’ announcement of 160 candidates.

The parties including Left and DMDK are learnt to have engaged in some fire-fighting exercise, with AIADMK supremo Jayalalithaaa postponing her campaign schedule, due to start today,to iron out the differences.

In what could be perhaps the last election for the DMK patriarch Karunanidhi considering his age,the 87 year-old leader is moving to his home turf Tiruvarur and his son to suburban Kolathur in Chennai.

Both presently represent different constituencies from Chennai.

AIADMK chief Jayalalithaa will be contesting from the temple town of Srirangam in Tiruchirappalli, where her family had its roots.
