The Ahmedabad Tamil Sangam has been striving hard for the last 18 years to preserve and propagate the rich and ancient Tamil culture among the younger generation settled in Gujarat,said V Thiruppugazh (IAS),the Chief Information Officer of Gujarat.
He was speaking at the 18th anniversary of the body organised at the Kankaria Open Air Theatre on Saturday.
Thiruppugazh fondly remembered Isai Perarignar Padmashri late Dr Sirkazhi Govindarajan,one of the leading playback singers of yore who was also a highly accomplished vocalist in Carnatic music with a clear preference for Tamil devotional songs,ancient as well as contemporary.
He lauded Padmashri,Kalaimamani Dr Sirkazhi G Siva Chidambaram for stepping into his father’s shoes and keeping alive the tradition despite the onslaught of satellite channels.
The vocalist also performed live on the occasion,rekindling the memory of his illustrious father.
Two CDs Aanmiga Chemmozhi Arunagiri Thiruppugazh and 108 Potri Archanai sung by Sirkazhi Siva Chidambaram were released by T Natarajan (IAS) Superintendent of Stamps and Inspector General of Registration.
Dr Siva Chidambaram advocated the Tamils in Gujarat to impart their mother tongue and culture to their children so that they stay connected with their roots.
