The state government has set a tentative target of constructing 50,000 houses for urban poor in the next one year under Kanshiram Shahri Garib Awas Yojna. Across all the 72 districts, sources said, the major cities have been given the target of constructing 2000 to 1000 houses, while small cities have been told to set up 1000 to 500 houses.
When the scheme was announced in 2008,the government had set a target of constructing around 1.01 lakh houses ever year. In this first phase about one lakh houses were constructed and allotted. But owing to lack of beneficiaries and land for setting up such houses, the government had slashed the target in 2009-2010 to only 42,000 houses.
Now in the third phase, the state government has once again kept the tentative target of setting up around 50,000 houses.
The district authorities have been informed about the new targets and told to reply within one week whether there are sufficient land and beneficiaries available to meet the given target.
We are surveying the availability of beneficiaries and land for the construction of 1,500 houses in our district, said Krishna Kumar,Additional District Magistrate,Moradabad.
Confirming the receipt of the new target, the ADM of Agra,Jagdish, said the district has been given a tentative target of 1,000 houses.
While beneficiaries would be available but the required land in urban area for setting up 1,000 houses may not be available. We have asked different departments to find out if land for construction houses in two clusters could be made available, Jagdish added.
While Ravinder Singh,Principal Secretary,Housing and Urban Planning Department, was not available for comment,an official of the department said that beneficiaries of UP Mukhyamantri Mahamaya Garib Arthik Madad Yojna would also be entitled to get houses under this scheme provided they dont have their own house.
After finding more than 30 lakh poor across the state for the governments Mukhyamantri Mahamaya Garib Arthik Madad Yojna, the government is hopeful to get sufficient beneficiaries for this scheme in its third phase (2010-11).
Beneficiaries might be available but unavailability of land in urban areas could affect the scheme. These are tentative targets and hence could be revised further, said an official of the department.
