Pune is emerging fast emerging as the most favoured destination for the Tata Motors’ Nano launch with Singur deadlock far from over.

The biggest hint to this effect came from the vendors who have been asked by the Tata Motors to meet in Pune on October 16. The meet is being described by officials within company as one at the “national level”. A vendors meet on such a scale has not been held in the recent past.

Of the major discussion points, one would be the Singur impasse. Officials among the vendors said that Tatas might take a final call on the site from where the Nano ancillaries would be delivered. The company’s plan for launch of the world’s cheapest car will be an obvious point for discussion as the Singur impasse continues.

“Yes, the company (Tata Motors) has informed us about the meeting, and we will attend it. We hope that there will be a decision on Singur as we have been in the dark about the situation for more than a month now,” said a senior executive of Endurance group which is supposed to supply aluminium die-cast components for Nano, mainly gear housing, engine castings and brackets.

While Tata motors confirmed that there was a vendors’ meet on October 16, they said it had nothing to do with the Singur impasse. When contacted, Tata Motors spokesperson confirmed the development, and said, “We will have the annual vendors’ convention on October 16 and it is a routine yearly meet.” Asked if the meeting was meant to discuss the deadlock regarding Nano project in West Bengal, he categorically denied, saying, “This is not at all related with Singur issue, and we are meeting as part of our regular meet with all stakeholders of Tata Motors, like dealers meet.” He added that not just vendors present in Singur, but all Tata Motors vendors would be invited. Tata Motors spokes-person was, however, not able to give the date or the venue of last year’s meet.
