The teachers in Punjab staged a dharna in the constituency of Punjab education minister, and demanded abolition of the post of Director General School Education.
It may be noted that the government had taken action against 565 government school teachers for poor results. This move has been opposed by the teachers who are now staging dharnas in protest.
The demands made by the teachers reflect that they do not want to be accountable for their duties.
The Democratic Teachers’ Front, Punjab, staged the dharna for four-hours near the residence of Punjab Education Minister Bibi Upinderjit Kaur.
A rally was taken out which culminated at the DC office where the Kapurthala SDM received the charter of demand of the teachers.
The demands included discontinuation of the Parho Punjab project in the state as it puts extra burden on the students, according to teachers.
They also demanded implementation of revised pay packages and other financial benefits but they were not in favour of additional work by the way of preparing mid day meals, conduction surveys and seminars.
Bhupinder Singh Braich, president of the front, said if their demands are not fulfilled, the next course of action would be decided soon.
ETT teachers lift dharna
The ETT teachers who staged protest on Saturday were forced to lift the dharna by the police. The protesting teachers were taken to the City Thana in Kapurthala. Police sources said it was done as a precautionary measure. One of the teachers, Sukhwinder Kaur, reportedly fell unconscious during the dharna and was admitted to the civil hospital.
