Team Vettel

Congratulations to Sebastian Vettel for winning the first Indian F1 Grand Prix (‘Vettel wins, drivers won over: ‘Dhanyavaad, congrats’,IE,October 31). It was a wonderful gesture on the winners’ part to dedicate their wins to fellow drivers who lost their lives recently. The organisers and volunteers were instrumental in making the event a success. The success of the Commonwealth Games, the cricket world cup and now the FIA F1 shows India has got the potential to organise international sports events. It was also remarkable that the Indian GP had roped in everyone to celebrate the event, something only witnessed in cricket.

Ranji wrongs

Every time after a debacle on fast, bouncy wickets abroad, there’s talk of providing greener tops for domestic matches (‘The Ranji test’,IE,October 31). Sadly, nothing changes in reality. Some points made in your editorial, such as the first innings lead giving extra points to make the batting team content, are to be done away with to ensure winning becomes most important for both teams. The BCCI cannot keep harping on the glories of Team India — it’s domestic matches and their overhaul that should be the board’s top-most priority.

Lions & lambs

It’s easy to criticise others and propose punishment for their wrongdoings (‘Team Anna closes ranks’,IE,October 30). But it’s very difficult to use the same yardstick for oneself. That’s why the proposed Jan Lokpal Bill with unlimited powers, sans accountability,is so dangerous. Team Anna’s reaction to the financial irregularities of its members is a perfect reflection of the future working of their Lokpal bill. Their Lokpal would watch all,but none would be able to check its irregularities. Instead of feeling embarrassed,Team Anna ridiculously called it personal attacks by the government.

Whose idea?

The Bombay high court has asked Shah Rukh Khan to deposit Rs 1 crore with the court before the release of his movie Ra.One. The court rejected the ban plea from scriptwriter-producer Yash Patnaik, but ruled that prima facie there has been a copyright violation. Patnaik had registered the concept with the Film Writers Association. It’ll be decided in due course whether he would be given credit or 10 per cent of the profits. Now Hindi filmmakers, habitual copiers of foreign movies and films in various Indian languages, will have to think ten times before taking this path.

Sardar,remembered

India’s “Iron Man” Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel is unforgettable because he was India’s all-time great architect. Our 545 provinces (that is,pieces) came under the rule of the Indian government. He was a gem of a diplomat who united India.
