Tech institutes feel the meltdown heat as recruitment dips by 40%

Cautious approach taken by companies in recruitment owing to economic downturn is adversely affecting campus placements this year in major technical institutes in the state.

Faculties in-charge of placement and training in these institutions say there has been at least a 40 per cent drop in the number of B.Tech candidates being recruited by the companies that visited their campuses during the current academic session.

The campus placement at the state's oldest technical institute — LD College of Engineering (LDCE) — seems to be among the most pitiable. Against 900 candidates, a little over 200 have got placements so far. Many candidates are being advised to join smaller companies because of cap on recruitment by top companies.

The major recruiter in LDCE this year was Tata Consultancy Services, recruiting 74 candidates at an average annual package of Rs 3.16 lakh, followed by Cybage, which recruited 25 candidates with an average package of Rs 3.8 lakh. Public Sector Undertakings also recruited from LDCE.

The scene at the campus of Faculty of Technology and Engineering, M S University seems to be no better. "Out of 400 candidates, 160 have so far got placements ," said S N Soman, dean of the faculty while pointing to the economic slowdown for the poor response from recruiters.

The situation was not good at BVM College of Engineering at Vallabh Vidyanagar. According to its placement officer P M Aggarwal, only 110 candidate got placements till now against 250 placements done last year.

Similarly, out of 500 eligible candidates at Marwari College of Engineering in Rajkot, 230 got placements. However, they were offered low salaries from maximum of Rs 3.5 lakh to Rs 3 lakh per annum.

Some companies are also reported to have deferred the recruitment, waiting for the political changes after the 2014 general elections as they are not sure of the same policies continuing after the polls.
