Techno Tales via Hamburg

Frederic of the techno outfit Kaiserdisco talks about boring Bollywood musicals, Indian chants and cheesy trance influences, as he gets set to perform at NH7 Weekender.

It was a casual meeting at a club in Hamburg in 2008 that led the two DJs to consider working on collaborations. It was just for fun, they told each other. But the chemistry between the two — Frederic and Patrick — was so explosive that they soon formed Kaiserdisco, one of the world's most renowned techo outfits.

Today, at the NH7 Weekender, Frederic will churn out some Kaiserdisco specials. Expect some of their classic mixes such as Salamanca, Amalfino and Aguja.

Known for mixing lazy house beats with an eclectic choice of sounds such as squeals, whistles, traffic noise and even some influences from chants, Kaiserdisco's music is both experimental and populist. "Kaiserdisco is just a combination of words from our earlier project names. In English it means "Emperor of Disco" but that was not the idea when we started," says Frederic.

While one does hear about techno artistes originating from Berlin and Frankfurt, Hamburg is not on the map and this makes the duo even more special. It is this very fact that they use to their advantage. "Frankfurt and Berlin have always been a bit more about techno and Hamburg was more house-oriented. We like both and combine them in our productions," says Frederic, who has been making music since 2003.

While growing up in the '80s and '90s, the two, individually, were more inclined towards trance since this genre was gaining popularity across the world at that time. Today, however, their music is a combination of a number of such influences in varying degrees. "It didn't take a long time to figure out that cheesy melody music wasn't our thing and our focus changed more to house and techno," says Frederic.
