In what appears to be an honour killing,a woman and her boyfriend, both 19,were allegedly beaten to death by her family in Swaroop Nagar area of Northwest Delhi. The victims have been identified as Asha and Yogesh Kumar.
Around 8 am,we got a call from a neighbour that there was something wrong in house number C-101 of Indraprastha Colony, a senior police officer said. Within an hour,a constable entered the house through the roof,as the house was locked, and found the couple lying dead.
Neighbours said around 1 am they had heard someone crying for help from inside the house. When we intervened, house owner Om Prakash and his son Sandeep told us to keep away as it was a family matter. Initially,we thought they had caught a thief and were beating him up, said a woman living nearby.
A neighbour claimed Asha, who had been sent by her parents to stay with her uncles family, had called Yogesh to her house at night.
He came in a Maruti van around 12.30 am. Ashas uncle Om Prakash heard her opening the door for Yogesh. He came down and saw them together. Infuriated,he started beating them up and called Ashas parents over, claimed a neighbour.
Ashas parents,Suraj and Maya stay in Gokul Puri in Northeast Delhi. Asha used to come visit her aunt who stays near Yogeshs house in Gokul Puri. Yogesh, who used to drive a van for a living, used to stay with his sister and uncles, the police said. When the family discovered Ashas affair with Yogesh, they got her engaged to someone in Sonepat. Neighbour Suresh Chand Gupta said,We saw the family leaving the house at about 3 am. Since the boy and girl did not come out till morning,we called the police.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (Northwest) N S Bundela said: Initial inquiry shows the couple was assaulted and even electrocuted. It seems the family locked the house and fled. Ashas father Suraj and uncle Om Prakash were arrested in the night.
