Two days after a 19 -year-old domestic help went missing with gold ornaments worth Rs 8 lakh and Rs 88,000 in cash from a Powai-based businessman’s house, the police nabbed him on Tuesday and recovered the booty. The accused, Sudhir Yadav, was employed barely three days before the incident took place. According to Powai police, Yadav took advantage of the family’s absence on Sunday night when they had gone for a wedding.
“Yadav is from Jharkhand and had come to Mumbai a year ago in search of a job. Yadav learnt that Vinit Arya, who is a textile businessman, was in need of a servant after his former servant quit on October 28. Yadav approached the businessman seeking a job and was immediately hired on October 29. However, on Sunday when Arya and his wife had gone out leaving his elderly father and two children asleep at home, Yadav seized his chance and stole gold ornaments and cash and fled,” said assistant police inspector S Waral of the Powai police station who added that Arya had immediately lodged a complaint with the Powai police.
While Mumbai Police repeatedly request the citizens to register the names and details of their domestic helps along with their recent photographs with the local police station, Aryas did not do so and were even unaware of even their servant’s last name.
“The Aryas knew the accused only as Sudhir and were not able to provide any other details except that he was from Jharkhand. We decided to keep a watch at Om Sai Nagar at Sion-Koliwada where several natives of Jharkhand stay. After keeping a watch for over 24 hours, Arya who was with the police team spotted Yadav entering the area, holding a bag. We immediately nabbed him and found all the valuables and cash in the bag,” said Waral.
