Animation films Rio and Rango salvage multiplexes to certain extent.
Small films with good stories were supposed to salvage the Hindi film industry in these times of IPL. However,Teen Thay Bhai has retired hurt without even opening its account at the box-office,leaving trade analysts disgruntled and multiplexes despondent.
The situation is so bad that many trade analysts and multiplex honchos preferred not to comment on its dismal figures over the weekend. Trade analyst Amod Mehra said that he did not keep a tab on the films collections after less than a handful of people saw the film on its opening day. Geerish Wankhede,Deputy General Manager of Cinemax India said,Teen Thay Bhai has not done well at all. Its collections over the weekend have been in the range of 10 to 15 per cent. This is nothing short of a washout. Trade analyst N P Yadav confirmed that the film has seen occupancies hovering around the 10 per cent mark. Its a disaster. Theres nothing else to say, he said. According to trade analyst Taran Adarsh, the movie collected Rs 2.3 crore over the weekend. The breakup is Rs 60 lakh on Friday,Rs 80 lakh on Saturday and Rs 90 lakh on Sunday, he wrote on bollywoodhungama.com. All attempts to reach PVR Pictures and Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra, the producers of the film, failed.
Animated Hollywood films Rio and Rango have come as a ray of hope, however. In fact,Rio that released on April 8 has managed to keep cinema chains from despairing. As Wankhede said,Animation films take time to sustain themselves at the box-office. Rio has been a big hit with children whose summer vacations have begun. The film had a significant occupancy rate of 35 to 40 per cent over the week and is gaining with each passing day on account of positive word-of-mouth. Rajender Jhala, programming head of Inox, also said that Rio has done good business over the week. Rango, starring Johnny Depps voice as a strange-looking lizard, too has received positive reviews and managed to give hope to multiplex heads. The response to the film has been encouraging, Wankhede said. Even Thank You collected more in its second weekend than Teen Thay Bhai on its opening weekend. A spokesperson from UTV said that the movie did a net business of Rs 7.5 crore over the past weekend. We did Rs 1.75 crore on Friday,Rs 2.5 on Saturday and Rs 3.25 on Sunday. Our total net collections currently stand at Rs 37 crore, the spokesperson added.
The film industry is now looking forward to Rohan Sippys Dum Maaro Dum to salvage itself out of the current limbo. The entire month has been quite bad for us. First, there was the World Cup followed by IPL. Even Game didnt do too well. We are waiting with bated breath for Dum Maaro Dum, Wankhede said. Mehra concurred ,saying,The film has a positive buzz around it. Hopefully,it will translate to good ticket sales from Friday onwards.
