A teenage couple committed suicide at Dum Dum Park in North 24 Parganas by jumping off the terrace of an apartment on Sunday. The couple was living in the apartment after tying the knot in August.

Police said the couple — Babai Pal (17) and Sumana (15) — got ‘married’ without their parents’ consent at the Dakshinashwar temple and had changed several houses in the last three months. Recently they had shifted to a room on the terrace of Niyati Apartments in Dum Dum Park.

According to the police, Sumana had been spotted on the edge of the terrace before she jumped.

“Babai ran to save her, but could not prevent her from jumping. In despair he, too, jumped off the terrace. While Sumana died on the spot, Babai was rushed to the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in a critical condition. Later, he succumbed to his injuries. No suicide note has been found,” the police said.

Babai’s father Sanjit Pal was unable to provide any clue as to why the couple committed suicide. The police, however, said that initial investigation indicated that Babai suspected Sumana of having an extra-marital affair. “We are also probing if Babai’s unemployment could be another reason for the couple to take the extreme step,” they added.

Sumana’s family, meanwhile, have lodged a complaint alleging dowry-related torture against the Pals, but no arrests have been made so far. The bodies have been sent for postmortem.
