Tempest Travellers

Footsbarn Theatre, famous for its nomadic lifestyle, is pitching tent (metaphorically) in India this month. Based in La Chaussée, central France, the troupe is famous for staging plays in the open and in large, circus-style tents apart from regular halls across the world. Not surprisingly, their productions add a carnivalesque touch — often dark — to classics of William Shakespeare and Moliere. These "caravan players" bring to India an adaptation of Shakespeare's The Tempest, called Indian Tempest. Created in collaboration with Indian artistes from Kerala, the play, in English, French and Malayalam, aims to re-contextualise the island of Caliban, colonised by Prospero. Set on a timeless imaginary island, it evokes power and decline, forgiveness and regret, ignorance and wisdom, dreams and ambitions, submission and rebellion, and brings in its wake a bestiary of spirits, shapes and monsters, who must share a world where music rules everything and poetry is beyond language. The Indian Tempest will be staged in Delhi, Thrissur, Bangalore, Mumbai, Goa and Hyderabad among others.
