Tenant verification gets a lukewarm response

More than a month after the Kolkata police made it mandatory for landlords to submit a complete profile of their tenants at the local police station,the security initiative has received only a lukewarm response in the city.

Post-Mumbai terror attacks,the police had announced that it was mandatory for all the house-owners to submit the tenant profile form and if they were found violating the norms,they would be penalised under Section 188 of the Indian Penal Code.

A visit to various police stations across the city,however,revealed a different picture.

The Charu Market police station,which is situated in a residential area,has received only five forms since December 1.

We are trying to create an awareness among the residents,as this area has a large number of tenants, said Arabindo Roy,a police officer.

The Gariahat police have also received only 25 forms till now. We are holding regular meetings with the residents. People are still not aware about the consequences of keeping tenants without proper verification. Had it not mandatory,not even a single person would have submitted the forms, said KK Naha,Officer-in-Charge,Gariahat police station.

The forms require the landlord to submit the details of the tenant like permanent address,occupation, phone number and two references along with a photograph.
