  • January 16: A woman wearing a vest lined with explosives blew herself up near Shiite worshippers in Diyala province north of the capital, killing nine of them.

    February 1: Two mentally disabled women were strapped with explosives and sent into busy Baghdad markets, where they were blown up by remote control. The bombs killed at least 98 people and wounded more than 200 at two popular pet markets.
