Thackeray’s ashes immersed in Sangam

The mortal remains of Bala Saheb Thackeray, founder of Shiv Sena, were today immersed in Ganga amid presence of party leaders and representatives of the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP).

The ashes were brought to the city from Lucknow by Shiv Sena's UP chief, Uday Nath Pandey, and other leaders by road. The ashes had been kept there on Wednesday at the party office, where people paid last respects to the departed leader.

In Allahabad, the urn containing the ashes was brought to Subhash Chowk at 11 am, where it was kept for around 35 minutes. "Party workers and leaders paid their last respects to the departed soul and then the ashes were taken to Sangam," said a Sena spokesperson.

The ashes were immersed at Sangam amid vedic chants by Anand Giri, the head priest of Bade Hanuman Mandir, in the afternoon.

Thackeray's ashes are being immersed at various places of religious importance, including Sangam and Varanasi, said the spokesperson. The 86-year-old founder of Shiv Sena died on November 17 at his residence in Mumbai.
