Hundreds of supporters maintained their vigil outside Shiv Sena chief Bal Thackeray's house, Matoshree, for the second day on Thursday even as party leaders assured that he was responding to medical treatment.

"His health is stable now. I have belief in God and am sure that God will make him all right," Uddhav Thackeray, flanked by his wife and sons, told the crowd late on Thursday night.

"Compared to yesterday, his health is stable. I have not given up hope and even you should not," he said.

"The life support system was required last night but not today," said Sena MP Sanjay Raut.

Among those who visited Matoshree today were BJP president Nitin Gadkari, NCP chief Sharad Pawar, industrialist Rahul Bajaj, actors Salman Khan, Rishi Kapoor and Randhir Kapoor.

Thackeray's nephew Raj Thackeray made frequent trips to Matoshree throughout the day.
