Thana rioting: Mamata behaved like ‘student leader’,says Left

The controversy over Bengal CM's intervention in the clash refuses to die down.

The controversy over intervention by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee after Sunday’s clash between police and youth during a religious procession refused to die down with the Left Front today alleging that she behaved like a “student leader” which was unbecoming of her.

“The incident is unprecedented and unfortunate. The way she went to Bhowanipore police station to get two of her partymen released is really unbecoming of a chief minister,” Left front chairman Biman Bose alleged at a press conference here.

“When you become chief minister, you should behave like a chief minister and not a student leader. This is not good for the fair name of West Bengal,” Bose, the state secretary of the CPI(M),said.

However,he said the chief minister, who also holds the Home portfolio, could visit any police station. “But this was a different issue and she could have spoken over phone with any senior officer instead of going to the police station.”

According to the police, the crowd during an immersion procession of Goddess Jagadhatri turned violent, pelted stones, ransacked the Bhowanipore police station and even tried to set ablaze police vehicles after being asked not to burst high decibel crackers before a hospital.

The police resorted to lathicharge which worsened the situation and the chief minister whose house is nearby and Commissioner of Kolkata Police R K Pachnanda and other senior officials had to intervene to pacify the mob.

No arrest has been reported so far.
